Muir MacKenzie, Jon Van Heerden and Gary Morrison are one of 500 teams participating in this years Mongol Rally which will see them driving from Aberdeen Scotland all the way to Mongolia, recording their adventures and experiences of people, culture and scenery along the way. Most importantly, by taking part in this journey they will be contributing and hoping to raise as much money and awareness for their two chosen charitable causes, namely MercyCorps and Cash for Kids
The rules state we need to raise a minimum of £1000 for an official charity to qualify, plus a secondary personal charity of our choice. When the team reaches Mongolia the vehicle is auctioned to raise further funds for a nominated charity.
The Mongol Rally is a 10,000 mile + journey across one sea, two continents, three deserts, five mountain ranges, eight time zones and nineteen countries, to finish in Ulaanbaatar - the capital city of Mongolia. What happens to them between Scotland, the desert, mountains, bandits and wilderness is anyone's guess. In a normal year just over half of the teams make it to the finish line.
On the 18th July 2009 Team ABZ 2 ULN, will commence their road trip. They will gather with the rest of the U. K. teams for the start at the famous Goodwood circuit. Two days later a meet up with the continental teams takes place in Prague. The various teams then depart on their chosen routes to hopefully meet up at the finish line. It is hoped our team will be driving on average 300 miles a day through Europe, skirting the Middle East via Iran, then onwards through Central Asia to reach our final destination of Ulaanbaatar Mongolia within four weeks.
